Executive Chef Edgar Navarrete trained at the renowned Patina Group under the guidance of Master Chef's Joaquim Splichal and Octavio Becerra.. He continued to hone his craft and established himself as a longtime bistro chef in some of the best kitchens in New York. City.

About Us

Ernesto Morel's more than 30 years as proprietor of La Mediterranée began when he stopped in at the establishment in the spring of 1980 and asked if he could buy a drink at the bar. "Not only can you buy a drink, you can buy the whole restaurant." Ernesto recalls the owner of the then-struggling bistro replying. Fresh from a five-year stint as the maitre d' at La Mangeoire, Ernesto did just that. He refurbished the space, commissioned handsome murals of the South of France; hired a chef specializing in Provencal cuisine: and within months La Mediterranée had become the popular neighborhood eatery that it remains today.

La Mediterranée,on Second Avenue at 50th Street , is about as voguish as spats - but considerably more comfortable. Quite simply, it is a wonderfully homey and neighborly spot that gives you a warm feeling upon entering - all timber and stucco with faux wooden shutters, colorful murals of France and comfortable banquettes. The moderately priced menu is just as familiar and soothing... the food is wholesome and satisfying ... The ambience is fresh and full of kitsch with trompe l'oiel windows opening onto views of the Mediterranean, tile floors, white stucco walls, hanging Moroccan lanterns and lovely fresh flowers. The tinkling piano in the bar-area and pleasant service led by owner Ernesto Morel, complete the background scene... Opt for a first rate Steak au poivre with excellent pommes frites; a bountiful plate of calf's liver and bacon, or terrific sweetbreads...Overall, I can't think of many restaurants in New York where $100 for two will provide such a pleasant evening.

Many loyal customers go back to La Mediterranée's first days., but Ernesto says his clientele also reflects younger residents who are moving into some of the new aparment buildings in the neighborhood. "I'm happy with the change I'm seeing here in Turtle Bay", he says. "It's bringing in young working families and that's good for all the merchants." A recent addition to La Mediterranée is a bar in front of the restaurant, where customers can also dine. Pianist Harold Jon plays romantic classics until 10:30 pm, then piped-in music at the bar takes on a more modern beat.
